THE STANKIEWICZ FAMILY REUNION
JUNE 21 THRU 28, 1998
COROLLA, NORTH CAROLINA
(use your "Back" button to return to this page after viewing each picture)

The reunion started about 6:00am as we got in the car to head south.  We were going to stop at Mom's for lunch, and then head out to check into the cottage around 3:00, official check-in time.  Well, if you have ever been to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, you know that the traffic can be horrendous coming in from the North during the summer time.  It was!  So we called Mom as we drove by the house, told her that we were going to stop and get lunch, and go check in.

We had lunch and then got to the cottage around 1:30.  It was ready and they let us in early, so we got first choice of rooms!  Dianne and Danny pulled in shortly after us, and Allan and Celeste came shortly after them (Al and Celeste had a head start, they had been on the beach waiting for check-in time!).  Place was GREAT, 3 levels, bunk beds on the lower level (great for the older kids, didn't have to listen to them and they didn't have to listen to us in the evening!), beds, laundry on the second level, and more beds and community area at the top!  But man, unloading the cars with those 3 levels sure built up your leg muscles in a hurry!

After settling in a little, Pat and I went to the grocery store for Round 1 of groceries.  Had hamburgs and hot dogs on the grill for dinner that evening, just got everything cleaned up, and in rolls Doug from Florida.  Did the trip in one day, brutal!  And don't drink a lot when riding with him, no potty stops allowed!

Danny, Doug, and David got up the next day (Sunday) at 4:00am (yes, in the morning) to go fishing.  Danny and Doug caught 5 Spanish Mackerel while David swore at the #$@% fish.  Oh yea, David got hit upside the head with one of Doug's fish.  Sideline: Doug gets first fish hook of trip in his finger, more to come later!  We go back, do the beach thing, eat, drink, beach, eat and drink some more, you get the picture.  The rest of the gang comes in that day (except Frank and Mary Jane, who come in on Monday) and check into their cottage.  We have HUGE pot of spaghetti (Prego, you think we are going to make homemade with this gang!) and salad.  Do the beach some more, eat some more, drink some more, kind of sets a recurring theme for the trip!

Tuesday, we have a catered dinner where all of us ate some great food.  We had chicken, shrimp, ribs, salads, all kinds of good stuff.  Everyone also got their copy of the family history and genealogy that night.

Somewhere along the line, we catch some more @#$% fish (are you getting the message yet that I got skunked?) and have grilled fish and shrimp for supper one evening.  Well, we continued to have a wonderful time.  Some of us would be on the beach at 6:30 or 7:00 in the morning for quiet time and watch the dolphins, the ocean, etc., others would get up a little later (the smart ones!), everyone just did what they wanted to do.  Oh yea, the rest of Doug's fish story that I promised.  Doug likes to fish and gets a LITTLE excited.  The second fish hook he tangled with got drove into his finger beyond the barb.  He comes running up the beach (actually, he is used to accidents and was walking calmly) with the hook in his finger (he had the fish too!).  He is transported to the clinic by Allan (he hadn't begun drinking yet) and Danny (he knew the way).  The doctor successfully removed the fish hook without having to amputate Doug's finger and added it to his collection of removed fish hooks that he kept hanging on the wall of the clinic (true story).

It was a GREAT time, and thanks, Mom, for putting this together.  The kids got to know their cousins better (and actually meet some new ones).  I also had a chance to renew acquaintances with my cousins and get to know my nieces and nephews better.  THE END.
